- They offer their services much more often in wartime
- They cost much less per man than in 1.03
- They show up in larger groups, the richer you are
- The AI no longer recruits them during peacetime. (It used to do so, and then it would disband them immediately - a terrible waste of money)
- They are still usually lower-tech troops than your core troops if you hire mercenaries from the fringes of the world, but they pack a punch when partnered with some of your own forces with a good leader. They are excellent for sieging as well. (If, on the other hand, you live on the fringes of the world, it is quite likely that the mercenaries have higher tech than you if you get Southern French or Italian mercenaries)
- And, of course, the Knights' Errant of Wherever are awesome to buy in the largest formations if you can afford them - and their upkeep. (And IF you can afford them, you are unlikely to have anything else to spend your money on)
- And that is without mentioning the significant bonus when fighting religious enemies: They have anonymous commanders. (At all other times, this sucks )
:gluck:
